If you are casting a spell that is a standard action and someone has a ready action to charge you or do something else that would provoke during this time then you still would not get to take your AoO.

I am going to have to remember that trick. Ready an action against wizard with a weapon.

I believe this is not entirely correct. If I read the SRD correctly, it only states that you do not threaten an area. There are however, things that provoke attacks of opportunity regardless of whether you threaten or not. Disarming and tripping (if the attacker does not have the appropriate feats) would still provoke an AoO, as would attacking an attended item (such as a spell component). Also, the caster should still get a chance to counter trip or disarm.

Actually if you read the SRD in the section under Attacks of Opportunity you will find the following:

Threatened Squares: You threaten all squares into which you can make a melee attack, even when it is not your action. Generally, that means everything in all squares adjacent to your space (including diagonally). An enemy that takes certain actions while in a threatened square provokes an attack of opportunity from you. If you’re unarmed, you don’t normally threaten any squares and thus can’t make attacks of opportunity.
Reach Weapons: Most creatures of Medium or smaller size have a reach of only 5 feet. This means that they can make melee attacks only against creatures up to 5 feet (1 square) away. However, Small and Medium creatures wielding reach weapons threaten more squares than a typical creature. In addition, most creatures larger than Medium have a natural reach of 10 feet or more.

Provoking an Attack of Opportunity: Two kinds of actions can provoke attacks of opportunity: moving out of a threatened square and performing an action within a threatened square.

It states that you only provoke when you do an action while in a threatened square. And if you do not threaten a square then you can not take an AoO.

In your example with say the disarm or trip, those are reactions that you get when someone attemps those on you and fails.

Of course, that then brings up something else. So you can't take an attack of opportunity during the casting. But the SRD also said you have to maintain your concentration during that whole round (in the case of a full-round spell). An opponent tries to trip you and fails. Can you attempt the return trip? Wouldn't that break your concentration? Is there a concentration check you can make to do that?

My thinking is that you can't attempt the counter trip or any other form of attack, but I'm not sure at this point.

I know that they do talk about things happening while you are casting a spell but that is not one of them. I guess that it is time to call WOTC again. :)
