Do you have specific things in mind?

Sure do. Pretty much what WotC avowed when they made the change- the combination of the popular view of "old" FR as overrun by good guys more powerful than the pcs, the exxxxtreme amount of setting info out there that led to overload and lots of "players know more about the setting than the dm" situations, etc.

Now, the version of FR I preferred was the original Grey Box, but I don't think going back is suitable for something like the Realms.

YMMV, of course, and obviously it does for many Realms groups.

Do the only smart thing: continue on post-Spellplague. Dark Sun was essentially in 2E and is an easy reboot. The Realms have been consistently in the game as a feature setting. Those wanting a reversion probably won't buy the new edition for some other reason anyway.

Personally, I'd also love to play DURING the Spellplague too, but that would be backtracking.

I never look back dahling.

Ah - so they *had* to break the existing realms in some fashion with 4e to offer some form of reset? I could see that making sense, I certainly preface FR games I DM with caution that I am not a walking FR encyclopedia for any area we visit or come acress.

It would be a challenge. Wishful thinking on my part as what I would do as a Brand Manager - push my own agenda! ;)

I don't think it was so much that they had to as they felt that it would make FR more accessible to enough people and convert enough FR haters and naysayers that it would be an overall improvement.

Frankly, had I been in charge, I would've done it very differently- but I prolly would have advanced the timeline by a century or so and thrown in a cataclysm to justify discarding all the baggage I didn't want; I do this with my home campaign periodically, too.

I hadn't looked at it in quite that way before, but I certainly see it as valid reasoning behind some of it.

Yeah, certainly another option to help mold the Realms to the way one sees it.

None of the above.

Go PRE-Gray box. Delve into the "not totally explored hints/lore/origins of continents, characters, and legends before they are made."

I do not do FR, but that would make the most sense to me. The current age has been detailed too much, so dive back into prehistory of FR, and make some cool stuff.

Go back to the gray box BEFORE the Time of Troubles.

Put an appendix in the back.

"If you wish to play post Time of Troubles, make these changes"

"If you wish to play post Cyric's Insanity, make these changes"

"If you wish to play during the Spellplague, make these changes"

"If you wish to play post-Spellplague, check out this book."

I liked the 3.0 version, especially the FRCS. I had gotten the 2e pdf a few weeks before in anticipation of getting the 3.0 version...the dry writing about put me off to getting 3.0. But, 3.0 had lost of plot hooks embedded into the material - very well done!
