  • Classic Forgotten Realms: the era of the original Gray Box [1357 DR]

  • The Forgotten Realms as it was originally conceived by Ed (ie. not TSR's version) [1357 DR?]

    Votes: 7 6.4%
  • Continue the existing timeline of 4E FR [c. 1479 DR]

    Votes: 27 24.8%
  • Have a world shaking event that returns Maztica and other lost lands. Advance timeline [c. 1489 DR]

    Votes: 6 5.5%
  • Spellplague Era: the campaign start date is only 10 years after the Spellplague. [1395 DR]

    Votes: 7 6.4%

I'd like to SEE Ed's original vision- pre TSR and Dragon mag, but I don't know if I'd want to buy it (until I saw it). Jeff added a WHOLE BUNCH of stuff.

Classic Grey box edged out current 4E timeline by a hair in my voting-Those are the only 2 versions of the setting I really enjoy- 2E & 3E eras totally turned me off the Realms

I don't think it was so much that they had to as they felt that it would make FR more accessible to enough people and convert enough FR haters and naysayers that it would be an overall improvement.

Ultimately though the question is did they gain enough new fans to offset driving a wedge through the fanbase (and we can argue if that schism exists or not, but let's not in this thread). And since support only exists (at the moment) via the DDI for the setting really, we can't look at sales of new FR books to judge the success of the redesign ethos for 4e FR, but I suppose we can look at the success of the novels and see if that product line is impacted (positive or negative) by the 4e game changes.

Personally I think they damaged the setting's IP value on a long-term basis, but without sales figures it's only possible to speculate.

Gray box (supplemented with the original FR series of supplements) and updated 2e Faiths and Avatars, Powers and Pantheons, and Demihuman Deities to 4e.

I guess one big problem about going back in time is that the Forgotten Realms has always had a metaplot tied closely to events in it's novel line. If you back track to, say, the Spellplague Era, do you have to honour all the current 4E timeline novels? It would be difficult to design with that restriction over your head. But at the same time, to go back in time and completely ignore novels ahead in the timeline that fans have invested in is a big ask. So like someone said, the Spellplaugue Era would probably be better done as a supplement like the Arcane Age boxed set.

I had no problem with the Spellplague but I didn't like the 100 year jump. But what is done is done and you have to move forward. I mean, look at the Dragonlance setting, it had the controversial Fifth Age era after the Chaos War that many fans hated. But then Margaret and Tracy came back onboard and tried to restore the "damage" done by releasing the War of Souls novels. The damage to Anaslon's landscape was (mostly) repaired and the gods returned and some semblance of the old setting was restored. Perhaps a similar approach could be taken to FR. You could have a mini world shaking event – perhaps awakened Priordials conspire to destroy Toril once and for all but the PCs thwart their efforts. In the process, however, Toril and Abeir realign and their lost parts return to each other. This might keep old time Realms fans somewhat happy. While new Realms fans can still have dragonborn and teiflings (trapped on Toril), interesting spellplague areas, earth motes etc. that still remain.

Indeed, why not keep Toril's connectivity to Abeir and release an Abeir campaign setting book! I remember the Dragonlance Time of the Dragon boxed set, detailing the continent of Taladas. It was a product under the Dragonlance brand but was almost like an entirely new campaign setting.

As a brand manager I think I'd continue with the existing time but I would consider source material for histroical eras, Netheril, Illefarn, Spellplague and so forth not tide to the metaplot.

I picked the grey box era, but I really wanted them to just continue the 3.0/3.5 timeline a bit without the stupid spellplague. Unfortunately, you didn't put that as an option. In other words, pretend the spellplague didn't happen. I don't care how they do it, but getting rid of the spellplague and all of it's consequences would be the only thing that would make me interested in FR again.

Is 3.0/3.5 Realms much different from Gray Box era Realms? From a marketing point of view, going back to "Classic Era" 1357 DR Realms might pack more of a punch. Perhaps 3.0/3.5 era Realms might not be as popular also as it acknowledges the Time of Troubles which some fans think of as just another spellplague.

What was Ed's original version like? I put it up there as a choice but, to be honest, don't know much about it. I've heard that Ed's original Realms doesn't have any real world analogues like Kara-Tur, Zakhara, Maztica, etc. But at the same time, I've heard the original Realms had connectivity to our own Earth (or at least it did in Earth's past and has now faded - and that is why it is know as the Forgotten Realms).

The 3e era was a gaping hole in the poll options, honestly. I think it would have gotten a lot of votes. The 3e FR book is almost universally held out as a gold standard when it comes to showcasing campaign design. It's a good book.

I would let FR go at this point. It's mutated into something that is completely foreign to the 1E-3E version. If a setting is to be used, make a new one.

If you MUST being it back then this is the choice I would make as well:

Ignore the Spellplague and anything after it as if they never existed, reboot to any point in or around 1372DR.

Alternatively, apologize to the fanbase and reboot to some point pre-Spellplague.
