I don't have my copy of BoED with me some i'm not sure what the answer is. Do you get to keep the abilities/powers granted by VoP when you change forms? Keep some? Thanks for any input.

You keep the benefits of the Vow, as long as you maintain the Vow itself.

Which will require some thinking outside the box, won't it?

Focus: A jade circlet worth no less than 1,500 gp, which you must place on your head when casting the spell. (The focus melds into your new form when you change shape.)

Or does VoP allow you to keep expensive items as long as they're components?

No, but IIRC, it allows you to pay them off with XP...

Which leads to even more interesting thinking outside the box....

So... you're required to pay no less than 1500 XP, which melds into your new form (back into your head no less), when casting the spell.

Well, shapechange is not the only means of changing forms; alter self, polymorph, wild shape, lycanthrope's alternate form, doppleganger's change shape, etc...

The key to this answer lies in the discription of polymorph/alter self back to which is what most of these abilities refer. I believe polymorph and/or alter self specifically state what abilities are and are not retained.

Isn't that XP stuff optional?

Normally a VoP character cannot make use of any spell with a costly material component or focus.

Actually, I think it would be 300xp, going with the stardard 1xp = 5gp formula used in magic item creation, which is probally applicable here.

The XP for gold cost stuff is:

1. Optional (but so is BoED)

and

2. Applies to material components only. For a Focus, I think you are just out of luck.

Of course there are many ways to change form, as noted above.

IIRC, a character with Vow of Poverty can still make use of spell components owned by other members of the party and loaned or given to him. If I were DMing this I would allow the character to use the focus if it was purchased and kept by another character.
