Since it says it *improves* to DR 5/evil, I would say it overlaps, not supercedes. Otherwise there are times when this is not an improvement. And it doesn't make sense that a high level character would suddenly become more vulnerable to a non-magical sword that just happens to be wielded by an evil outsider, this while becoming more resistant to magical swords wielded by ordinary folk.
