Vulnerability and resistance interaction

Okay, so my question is simple. How does it affect a creature with resistance to cold (could be any other type) if someone uses a power or feat that gives it vulnerability to cold.

The reason I am asking is the whole lasting frost + wintertouched synergy. What happens when the rogue in question runs into a monster that has resistance to cold?

Cheers

Both of them apply. The cold damage is reduced by the amount of resistance, and also increased by the amount of vulnerablity.

So if the rogue still gets the combat advantage bonus, since it's vulnerable?

TBH that was the answer I expected the least. Could any of you point to where it says so in the rules? I would like some RAW backup on this one.

Cheers

The rules say the creature has resistance, and the rules also say that you give him vulnerability. They do not say one cancels the other out or that one overrides the other.

Show me some RAW that says it doesn't work the way we said.

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound as if I was contesting your ruling. I asked for RAW so that I knew what to point at, both as DM and as player.

I am familiar with the rules, it just never occured to me that it was that obvious. Since neither rule says it negates the other, both are in effect.

DMG p 176, though it's specifically talking about gaining vulnerabilities and resistances through tremplates.

If a monster has vulnerability to a given damage type and then receives a template that grants resistance or immunity to the same damage type, it retains its vulnerability. For example, a creature that has vulnerable 10 necrotic and gains resist 10 necrotic from a template ends up taking no extra damage from a necrotic attack. However, if an effect strips it of its necrotic resistance, it is still vulnerable to necrotic damage.
