My thought was "Hmm, interesting. Wonder if the next big breaking news will be what kind of pizza he likes."

Cripes, it's not even worthy of news, except possibly for the name change (to avoid future confusion). What's the big deal?

Seriously. Fascination with the personal lives of celebrities completely escapes me.
I'm not entirely sure he qualifies as a celebrity anyway. He's obviously tried, as has his brother, to keep as low a profile as possible.

Sexual preferences were mentioned in the article. And, many folks feel that gender preference, as a part of sexual identity, is reasonably enough connected to be covered by the term.

But, if you don't like it that way and want to be picky, fine by me. The person's gender preference is also none of our concern.

Given that one of the people that reads these boards, and probably this thread, is a female who used to be a male (physically), and who has a sexual preference for women that is unchanged by their gender selection, I think it's an important distinction that is not trivial or picky.

I think that it is unreasonable for anybody to expect someone to have that kind of knowledge of the personal lives of people who read an internet message board. I didn't find the original statement to be of a tone that a reasonable person would consider offensive.

If we try and express ourselves in such a way that nobody could ever take offense at our statements; nothing would ever be expressed.

There are rules governing content and tone of post here. Aside from those regulations, if somebody takes offense, then that is the risk they take by reading a public board. Ones freedom of expression is not trumped by somebody else’ sensitivities.

It isn't sensitivity. I was pointing out that Gender Preference not only isn't at all linked to Sexual Preference, but that the examples are common enough to include someone likely reading this thread.

I wasn't saying that there was going to be offense taken, I was saying that the distinction was real enough to be demonstrable here, on this board.

So, let me be clear again. Gender Preference isn't Sexual Preference, any more than Cross-Dressing is the same as Sexual Preference or Gender Preference. These are distinct ways of looking at self and the world, and shouldn't be confused with each other out of laziness or ignorance or any other justification for confusing two distinct things. To me, it's akin to saying "Chinese, Japanese, whatever, both are Asian".

I'm going to close this thread -- not because it's turned into anything horrible, just because the information about the Wachowski's has been communicated and I'm not sure much more needs to be said.
