Wall of Force, Shaped as an hemisphere

Well, there's a spell called Resilient Sphere that does that, but the Wall of Force spell itself, as written, doesn't permit it - the only option listed under Wall of Force for the shape is:
"The caster can form the wall into a flat, vertical plane whose area is up to one 10- foot square per level. The wall must be continuous and unbroken when formed. If its surface is broken by any object or creature, the spell fails."
Perhaps you're confusing the ability of the Wall of Ice spell?

my first 3e run was with my roommate and our friend ... we had the 3.0 PHB, DMB was not out yet, nor was the MM.
I went with spellcraft checks to alter spells on the fly, as long as they were within the original function of the spell.
in running the 2e Against the Giants with the 3e PHB I allowed the PC's to cast wall of force and change it to Force Netting with a spellcraft check. This allowed them to get a significant protection boost (neg to attacks) from about 20 or so Hill Giants hurling boulders at them.
Instead of looking up a rule, they simply asked if they could try X, I said sure roll better than Y.

It's in the 3.0 PHB. Before 3.5, Wall of Force could be shaped as a sphere, hemisphere, or flat wall. So you must be thinking of an OLD old Sage Advice. That or the current Sage at the time was, as usual, not so keen on the rules as he was supposed to be, and was remembering how Wall of Force USED to be before 3.5.
