Wall of Thorns

You're not right about entangle, though:

Despite its appearance, a wall of thorns is not actually a living plant, and thus is unaffected by spells that affect plants.

Casting entangle on it is ineffective.

As for strength checks representing breaking through it, that's not quite correct either:

A wall of thorns can be breached by slow work with edged weapons. Chopping away at the wall creates a safe passage 1 foot deep for every 10 minutes of work. Normal fire cannot harm the barrier, but magical fire burns it away in 10 minutes.

That's the passage that annoys me: while strength matters when passing through it, making a hole in it is easier for a Str1 toddler with a butterknife (not a spoon, as I said before) than for a great wyrm dragon, inasmuch as the dragon doesn't have edged weapons. The flames of a baby red burn it away as quickly as the flames of a great wyrm red.

Giving it hit points handles the damage much more elegantly, IMO. 500 hp with a hardness of 5 is, I think, a fair ballpark; awhile ago we figured out that that would take a fellow with an ax and a decent strength about ten minutes to chop through.

Just my thoughts; there's a reason why this spell gave my DM headaches :).

gah, another stealth revision evil!! (unless that was errata in 3rd ed, it wasn't in the PHB version). At the time I had opportunity to use it, entangle was a go from all the info we had...

Add that to the flavor gutting of reincarnation and I'm glad I won't be playing a druid under 3.5... :(

I dunno how it was officially written in 3.0, but that's definitely how we played it then, based on how amazingly powerful WoT already is. I could see making a third-level spell that creates entangling weeds from any surface, but allowing WoT to entangle is a bit much, IMO :).

Druids, as I've said elsewhere, are plenty powerful as written.

But I do agree about reincarnation: it's yet another change that makes 3.5 less flexible and less interesting. Balance isn't always the holy grail, especially when it comes at the expense of flavor.
