Wand in a Weapon?

Quidam

First Post
Are there any rules for making a wand out of somthing more useful than a stick? Staffs can be made into quarterstaffs or cudgels- would there be anything unbalancing about allowing a wand to be made out of a nonmagical masterwork weapon? Are there any variant rules published regarding it?

Isn't there a feat in Complete Arcane where you can hit someone with a wand? Wand Strike or something?

I frankly don't see anything unbalancing about it, especially if you plan to charge for the extra costs, whatever they might be. The only thing that would even spark a question would be if you had some house rules for recharging wands. But even then, I don't think so.

I've seen Wand Strike and, while neat, costs a feat and I'd question if it's a good deal at the cost. I don't want to trigger the wand with an attack, I just want to have a wand in hand and threaten an area while still having a hand free for somatics. Plus it opens the way for a lot of cool flavor, shooting magic missiles from your morningstar or lightning from your longspear.

edit: for cadence

Exactly my opinion. I think the only reason why there are only "sticks" is just a lame stereotypical "wizards wield big staffs, wands, and rods".

I think the Arms and Equipment guide had swords with a hollow pommel (where you would store a wand) that allowed the user to be wielding both the sword and the wand at the same time.

'Twas a crossbow.

Deathwand, light crossbow, holds 2 wands. Don't remember the cost. Something like a +1 enhancement bonus on it.

In one game I played in, the DM allowed one of the players (a fighter or ranger, I think) to have armor with a small groove etched into it. A wand could fit snugly into the groove and be fastened in place. Since our fighter was *always* dropping, it allowed anyone with healing spells or use magic device to activate the wand that was physically attached to the fighter for that very purpose.

It may not have been the most elegant solution (or the most balanced, thinking back on the way we went about it.... no extra cost) but it certainly made things interesting.
