With 2e, I had fun, at the time, when we heavily house ruled it and so many of our house rules turned out to be core in 3e. When we played Rules Cyclopedia D&D, we did it for a short while as a bit of a lark, and realized it was fun, but we couldn't bring ourselves to limit ourselves to just what was there.
It's fun to think about nostalgia, that somehow prior versions of the game were better or more fun, but to me 3.x is the highest form of the game. It can be run rules light (if the DM isn't picky about AoO and the exact wording of things), but then any version can be. I feel comfortable with 3e, at home, not like I was just playing it for lack of anything better.
