Wanted: A female point of view please

Wow that was a quick spiral into ugliness. I know I'm a lurker, but I usually expect ENworld threads to be a bit more mature.

Anyway, in the hopes of bringing things back on track: I am a female gamer, and I run Pathfinder. Whaddya wanna know?

No. I'll tell you what I think the problem is. Total lack of understanding, and some people taking themselves far too seriously.

You've been around for a year, so you should know better.

Essentially, if a Mod has warned you, then regardless of how you percieve your comments, you've been warned that it has overstepped the mark.

The appropriate thing is to drop the subject. Often people apologise in the thread or via PM if they hadn't realised they inadvertedly offended. Other times people walk away from the thread voluntarily, because they realise that they are not in tune with those people on that subject. Both of these are great responses.

The response that often ends up poorly is frequently lampooned as the "it's the troof" rebuttle, and is almost always best avoided.

I'll leave it up to you to decide which route you prefer to take.

Regards,

Hi All, Original poster here. I never intended this to get out of hand with my question. It was written poorly, and for that, I really am sorry.

I should have asked, have you seen the same thing I was seeing here? and if so, if you are a female gamer that did switch, what was your reason.

I feel really badly that this all feel apart and I do really appriecate your comments.

Maybe we should stick a fork in this one and call it done?

Hey!

First, I am in Des Moines as well! Do you go to Mayhem?

Second, from what I have seen, in our area and in the CR area, is that it seems as if Iowa has a lot of home games that don't leave the home game arena so to speak. What I mean is, that it seems that people start a group, find a home game, and then stay in that. Forever. :)

Essentially, they don't come out of their game. There are some exceptions to this, such as meetup and games at Mayhem, but that's about it.

As to the original question, I think it's been answered. It varies, just as it does for men. My wife preferred story but another female gamer wanted to kill, Kill, KILL!

Evildmguy -> I'm actually in Norwalk, but as you know, its pretty much a suburb of the megatropolis of DM lol...I tend to only go to Mayhem to pick up dice or stuff. Maybe I should post there, less dangerous lol...Played on a 4E D&D game day once so may have run into you and never knew....happen to know if there's a group in the area I've might have missed for Pathfinder?

I agree that there are a lot of home games and small groups around here..which is great...but some of the comments are coming from these types of groups....I haven't heard of this thing I was seeing from buds out of state that have games.

All,

I posted this same question in the Pathfinder groups and other places off enWorld and got some feedback from some female gamers. I really appreciate them taking the time to respond.

Guess from their responces that maybe we could add more role-play and not jump on every system add-on as if it was the only way to play. That's REALLY summerizing. I never expected that there was only one female view as that's stupid and everyone recognize that...just looking for views outside my own gender....although there were a few bumps in the road through these threads, I'm glad I asked and I'm glad you posted your views as well.

Hey all,

The female player in my group really doesn't care what system, she finds most of the rulebooks boring, so we mainly taught her by example, which worked fine, but mostly it was just finding the system that worked the best, which is pathfinder, but I'm sure 3.5 would have been fine too.

just my experience,

I know that at one game day, there was a group that all had their Pathfinder books out and were going to play it. They seemed to be a group that played at Mayhem but I don't know how often.

I have talked to some of the guys from there and they know some groups that are playing 3.x or went to pathfinder. So, yes, there are some groups like that there but I don't know them personally and I did switch to 4E.

It's funny because I am wondering if I *had* something like that but moved away from it. What I mean is that I used to immerse myself in the game and while I didn't try and run every merchant when all they wanted was a cloak (called "buying the cloak" by us because one game I did do that and then we didn't get much else done!) but run those merchants where they are looking for information as well. I got some new players and people who weren't comfortable with that, so they would describe what they wanted their character to do and then roll for it. Okay, that's fun.

But what hit me was that we "lost" something in doing that. It wasn't as immersive as it was when we role played things out. So, I am trying to get back to some of that. Certainly, it's a fine line for any group on how much of it they want but I think my group went too far away from role playing and am trying to get them to come back to it. I will see how it works.

Both females in my group enjoy our games more since we switched to 4E

They like having to consult the character sheet less, since I print their powers and skills in cards.

We do not have Pathfinder, but my understanding is that Paizo books have graphic designs and art that are much superior to WotC's, so visually oriented people would find them easier to read and understand.
