Wanting "mook" rules for D&D ...here's what I have thus far

Thinking of using the Star Wars d20 way of doing mooks. With Vitality and wound points. Thugs in Star Wars d20 don't have vitality it lends to a cinematic feel to the game which I want for D&D. I'll be using the VP/WP rules from unearthed Arcana. I'm thinking that I'm only be giving VP to "important" characters/creatures. Thus a one of the troll minions of the evil wizard wouldn't have VP. But Garrak the wizard's troll captain would. The only problem that I'm running into is how to swing Challenge ratings. Obviously a troll with only his wounds isn't much of a CR 5 encounter. Suggestions? Maybe I'll have to switch to storyline methods of handing out XP. what do you all think?

I do think only wounds drastically drops the CR of a given encounter. But you can always just give out less XP, or only story-based XP like you said. Exact numbers are hard to give you, but part of a beast's CR comes from how long it takes to kill it. If you can kill it quick, it doesn't give much of a challenge (though some).

I think I'd look for better mook rules, personally. While you've got the right idea, I just can't see trolls as mooks. Goblins, kobolds, orcs maybe...but nothin' over 6'5" :p

I'm wondering why you need them. If they're just going to be mooks, they should be taken out in one hit, regardless of the level. So to 1st level folks, peasants might be mooks. To 3rd level, goblins, 5th level orcs, &c. And as mentioned above by Kamikaze Midget, the CR would definitely have to be adjusted, as that takes into account the fact that they might not be splatted in one hit and get their chance to roll a natural 20.

Don't bother to go VP/WP. Just disregard HP for the mooks.

When they get hit, give them a Fortitude save vs. Grisly Death. I'd say for D&D maybe DC = (10 + 1/5 Damage) or something like that. Don't let them save more than once or twice, and you're golden.

I found in SWRPG that the no-VP rule was really just more trouble than it was worth. They took the WP damage, then had to make a save vs. dying because they took WP damage. And 9/10 of the time, with Lightsabers and Blaster Rifles, the damage was enough to be fatal, or very nearly. So why TRACK it? Just bump off each mook when it gets hit.

The real problem with vp/wp in D&D is that you have to figure out how to factor racial HD into the equation. You can't just go about having a dragon with only 20 wp, and it doesn't make sense for a run-of-the-mill, garden variety Colossal monstrous spider to have hundreds of vp, either!

I'm headed off for lunch so I can survive my next class, so why don't you email me and I'll get back to you on how I prefer to work D&D monsters into vp/wp? You can email me via the hyperlink on my public profile :)
