I kind-of feel like an actual movie adaptation of the original novel, in its original setting, really wouldn't go amiss.

I agree. I'd love to see a movie that takes place in the original time period and location, without the story altered or bits left out, but with a Hollywood budget.

One of the few things I liked about Spielberg's version, was the look of the tripods. Just having a good special effects studio taking care of what the Marsian war machines look like, with the budget to realise their vision, helps a lot. But of course he butchered just about everything else.

That would just bore me to tears. Like Hitchhiker’s Guide, I’ve seen this story enough times that I can’t face another retelling. Radio, stage, films, TV, even a VR live action experience in London. Maybe they should just remake Star Wars 40 times instead. (They will as soon as they can).

I guess it kind of was. I did like most of the Spielberg remake though with Tom Cruise.
okay I have to admit I read it when I was 12, but it was hard for me to understand what was going on. but also, everything I had learned about War of the Worlds via references and adaptations up to that point couldn't prepare me for the original material. even the cover of the book I read makes it look a lot more exciting than I thought it would be

Though not quite a movie, didn't BBC just do that recently? (I admit I didn't watch it, but I think I saw commercials for it).

That DOES look exciting. FWIW, the 1953 movie poster isn't half bad either. And that movie actually was pretty action packed and violent for the time.
