Warden L1 Striker Damage ?

How does a Defender, the warden, get so much at L1 ?

An at-will slow with + str and then +con (Crippling Crush) on a 1-10 Craghammer with brutal 2.

whats that, about 16 damage average at L11

Isnt this a bit over the top damage for what is a really good defender tank ?

Aren't Crippling Crush and Craghammer Proficiency both feats? To have both at level one, you'd have to be human. Regardless, I think having to spend two feats to accomplish that sort of damage is reasonable. It's not like either of those two things are Warden features.

Goliath Warden has Craghammer as a sub class of Hammer, isnt Craghammer like Hammer a military one hander ?
No, a craghammer is Superior. Goliaths don't get proficiency in it for free with that feat.

Dwarves, OTOH, get it with Dwarven Weapon Training.

Fighter with Brash Strike (or Weapon Master's Strike), Paladin with Holy Strike, and Swordmage with White Lotus Riposte get similar levels of damage. Fighters with Wicked Strike and Hewing Charge get even higher damage on a charge.

Defenders can do quite a bit of damage if they are built for it.

Goliath Great weapon figher, great-axe, Goliath weapon prowess, weapon master's strike, 20 in str 16 in con

1d12 + 5(str) + 3(con) + 2(weapon prowess) = avg damage 16 from a figher.

Any weapon-using character (defender or no) who spends a first-level feat on a superior weapon (especially if that weapon is a two-handed weapon, even moreso if that weapon is a brutal weapon) is going to seem super-powerful at level 1.

Yeah, you're using the most powerful weapons you can and then spending a feat to up that damage...what else would you expect? Question is, does that really qualify as "striker level"?

Let's compare to a Rogue with 18 DEX/CHA using Sly Flourish, and who has spent a feat to increase his sneak attack die. Assuming he has CA, he'll be hitting for 1d4 + 4 + 4 + 2d8, which is 19.5 damage on average. However, on a crit he'll be doing 28 damage, which is a lot more than your Warden can manage.

So no, I don't see 16 damage on average at level 1 as being "striker level". It's just very good, but probably won't compare as favorably at higher levels without SIGNIFICANT feat investment.
