My main issue with 40K/WHFB is the inbred miniature rollover embedded with the game. If you're only in for the short term, it isn't a problem. But GW has certainly designed their game that every couple of years, you have to buy new books and often new models to keep up in the game.
Beyond that, I prefer 40K to WHFB; I had actually bought a WHFB elf army but promptly sold it after a bad experience with an orc warband and the unbeatable character figure in the army. And pretty much everyone else in the gaming scene down here was using similar character-heavy (or demon-lord heavy) armies. This was several years ago, and I have been told characters have been toned down, but it was bad enough an experience to completely turn me off from WHFB pretty much forever after.
Unfortunately, I haven't had any experience with Warmachine, so I can't offer a comparison there.
