Warlock confirmed in PH1...

the wizard is...directing magically controlled minions to aid in combat (charmed goblins, summoned celestial badgers, etc)
For the sake of the game, let's hope they don't nerf it all by axing celestial badgers!

On a different topic, I am also bothered by the W-triplet. I'd much prefer it if each of the initial classes started with a different letter:
Wizard -> Mage,
Warlock -> Sorcerer,
Ranger -> Hunter (or Rogue -> Thief)
In a reworking of D&D 3e for a campaign setting of mine, I was kinda halfway into doing it when inspiration dwindled off.

Arcanist [wizard]
Battlemage [warrior-wizard ala the duskblade, etc]
Commander [knight/marshal/etc; very cha based]
Crusader [paladin of every alignment]
Cut-throat [assassin/rogue base class]
Duelist [swashbuckler/duelist PrC combo]
Mentalist [psion]
Priest [cloistered cleric/archivist combo]
Pugilist [de-asianized monk & fighter combo]
Scout [ranger class that killed the scout and took his stuff, ironically]
Shaman [nature priest ala the druid/spirit shaman etc]
Thief [rogue; more cha based]
Warrior [fighter]

I don't suppose I'll ever finish it now, but your post reminded me of the unholy trinity I have for the letter 'C', and the double 'P' and 'S' :uhoh: :uhoh: :uhoh:

cheers,

This scheme would pan out to be:

Defender: Fighter (M), Paladin (D)
Striker: Rogue (M), Warlock (A)
Controller: Wizard (A), Druid (D)
Leader: Cleric (D), Warlord (M)

Two of each role, 2 arcane, 3 divine, and 3 martial. Looks pretty good. I originally thought something similar only with the sorcerer instead of the warlock.

Maybe they make a distinction between melee and ranged when pigeon-holing classes? For example consider the martial striker rogue and the martial striker ranger(?). They both fill the same slot but maybe there are actually two different slots; martial melee striker and martial ranged striker.

Say, the wizard is the arcane ranged controller then the monk could be the martial melee controller. Or maybe the warlock is an arcane melee controller (not very likely though).

The warlord is a martial melee leader and the cleric is a divine melee leader. But the bard would probably be a arcane ranged leader (hard to play the flute in the first rank.)
