On a different topic, I am also bothered by the W-triplet. I'd much prefer it if each of the initial classes started with a different letter:
Wizard -> Mage,
Warlock -> Sorcerer,
Ranger -> Hunter (or Rogue -> Thief)
In a reworking of D&D 3e for a campaign setting of mine, I was kinda halfway into doing it when inspiration dwindled off.
Arcanist [wizard]
Battlemage [warrior-wizard ala the duskblade, etc]
Commander [knight/marshal/etc; very cha based]
Crusader [paladin of every alignment]
Cut-throat [assassin/rogue base class]
Duelist [swashbuckler/duelist PrC combo]
Mentalist [psion]
Priest [cloistered cleric/archivist combo]
Pugilist [de-asianized monk & fighter combo]
Scout [ranger class that killed the scout and took his stuff, ironically]
Shaman [nature priest ala the druid/spirit shaman etc]
Thief [rogue; more cha based]
Warrior [fighter]
I don't suppose I'll ever finish it now, but your post reminded me of the unholy trinity I have for the letter 'C', and the double 'P' and 'S'
cheers,
