Actually, I'm in broad agreement with you, especially if you can get access to a PrC like the Alienist, which gives your familiar better enhancements anyway. I too think the feat is unlikely to appeal to many people who already have a familiar. That's exactly the problem - it's only really useful to Bards and the like. Given the popularity of PrCs like the loremaster, you can see a situation arising in which many of the most augmented familiars won't actually belong to wizard/sorcerers at all. Seems a little ridiculous, even if as you say, the extra benefits don't amount to much.

Probably the most elegant solution is the other one mentioned by Silveras, whereby the feat allows you to designate one of your arcane casting classes as your 'familiar class', without being able to stack all arcane classes for this purpose.
