Warlocks Flee the Scene solo?

Hello everybody.

I've been playing a warlock for a couple of weeks with the understanding that the 'Flee the Scene' invocation cannot be used to transport others along with you. This isn't particularly troublesome, but after rereading the description in Complete Arcane, I am left wondering where I got the idea from in the first place. I'm pretty sure it's out there somewhere, but I just can't find it.

So if anyone could point me in the right direction, that'd be great.

Well the description of the invocation states thet it allows you to use Dimension Door as a spell-like ability, although with a range of short, whilst simultaneously leaving behind a realistically reacting illusion of yourself for one round. (I don't think i'm allowed to retype verbatim, closed content and all that.)

It seems pretty clear to me that the illusion left behind would be only of yourself. However, I fail to see any restrictions on taking along anyone. Perhaps it says somewhere else how invocations cannot be used to buff/teleport/help others directly? (My DM seems to think this, but I'm getting more skeptical by the minute.)

If the range is personnal that's only for you and if there is no precisions about bringing some people it's only for you again, by default.

...and your DM is guilty of skimming the rules text, rather than reading it. :)

There is no restriction on invocation use. In fact, it's probably best to simply think of them as Spell-like abilities, usable at will.

The Invocation in question says:

IOW, look at the description of Dimension Door, the 4th level Sor/Wiz spell. You can do that, with the only change being range.

Can you take someone along with you when you DD? => Yep.

If you check the bottom of page 6 in CA, you'll see a bit of descriptive text that the DM might have latched onto (wrongly, BTW).

"...since [the warlock's] unique abilities provide him with little magic to use for his companions' benefit."

This is not a restriction. It's simply a generalization of the Warlock's available powers.

Just to clear things up: my DM did not intentionally impose this rule as such, I thought it was correct. I just couldn't remember where we got the notion from, and couldn't find any reference to such a rule either... So it would appear we were suffering from identical brain-farts.

Anyway, thanks for the speedy replies.

Interesting. From an enemy's point of view, he'd see the warlock touch his friend, and the friend would disappear. The warlock's image would remain in place, but both would have relocated. That's a fun mental image.

If you think that's fun, think on this piece:

"...After using this spell, you can’t take any other actions until your next turn...."

So:

#1)Warlock uses Flee the Scene, and touches a friend to come along.
#2)Enemy sees Warlock touch ally, ally disapear.
#3)Illusion of Warlock continues to act like the Warlock normally does for one round, possibly even "taking (fake) actions"..
#4)Meanwhile the real Warlock is standing someplace else, unable to take any further actions that round.

:)
