D&D 5E Warlock's Revealed in Livestream

In 3.5e, many invocations had durations but since you could almost always recast them without anything bad happening they were often infinite. In 4e, most were encounter or daily so you couldnt just recast them.

As for at-will disguise self. That would be cool in a doppelganger/chameleon way. Making it short rest would remove any "replicant shuffle shenanigins". One person stuffed in a closet per hour.

But how long do they last?

I mean could you walk around all day with Disguise Self up?

As someone who enjoyed the warlock in 3e, that's exactly what I want to be able to replicate: all the time, under some sort of magic.

I can envision it happening in 5e by having Disguise Self first be a spell that you can learn (and cast and it has its normal duration of, say, until the next short rest), and then apply an Invocation to that makes it at-will (so you can continually change it and refresh it).

In my mind, Warlock lies on an extreme end of the continuum between "1/day big booms," and "do it always, but it's not a big deal." I imagine a high-level wizard doing some more remarkable stuff than Disguise Self, but maybe my warlock doesn't need to polymorph self or whatever....just disguise himself...as whatever...all the time...

Hell, Changelings can do it. ;)

I appreciate your offer very much, but I don't need your help in order to adapt the warlock to my help, I'm sorry if I sounded curt or rude, it's just that I broke my right elbow several hours after the live steam so the pain plus being forced to use only the left hand cause me to write as little as possible.

Warder

Get well soon!

And then the L&L comes out and directly contradicts a lot of what Mike said. Huh.
The warlock gains a small number of spells per day, but all those spells are cast at a spell slot level determined by the warlock's level. A high-level warlock casts fewer spells than a wizard of the same level, but each of those spells is cast at a heightened level of potency.

And then the L&L comes out and directly contradicts a lot of what Mike said. Huh.

The only contradiction is the word "day", the rest isn't a contradiction. Technically the "day" part isn't a contradiction either, since mages get per-day spells and also renew one at a rest, they just have a different renewal method.

And then the L&L comes out and directly contradicts a lot of what Mike said. Huh.

I'm picking that warlocks choose their spells at the start of the day, and refresh those same spells after each short rest. There isn't really any contradiction here, although the L&L should have mentioned short rests.

Yeah Mearls later responded to a twitter about the days thing and it was a typo.

Speaking of Twitter if Mistwell, or someone else with a Twitter account could ask Mearls about what the Warlock gets in the latter half of the class that would be nice. Or ask about if the Pseudodragon or Quasit is the only summon the Chain Warlock gets or if they get better more powerful combat capable ones as they level.

Hm. So the "higher level of potency" thing may mean that the Warlock will only know lower level spells, but have access to higher level spell slots than a Wizard of the same level.

Well we were told by Mearls that Warlocks would have 5th level spell slots at 10th level, but would not get 6th level spell slots until 20th level. He also said that he has 2 spell slots per short rest at 2nd level and would still have 2 spell slots per short rest at 10th level, but that it would improve to eventually be 4 spell slots at 17th level.

He also later mentioned that all the Warlock's spell slots will be for the highest level he can cast. So at 20th level the Warlock should be able to cast 4 6th level spells per short rest. Though no idea how much of that is because Mearls' Warlock was going to go Tome at 3rd.

"Actually, you hit 5th around 10th, then 6th at 20th. That fits in with our spell design - 6th level = big power boost"

"In terms of numbers, my warlock will have 2 spell slots from 2nd level until I reach 11th level. Tops out at 4 at 17th."
