here are somethings I missed; for one I'm use to playing games like Elder scrolls where no matter what class you pick you can do anything you want, secondly more of the people I'm going to play with are friends of my friends, and thirdly i haven't met with any of them since i got word of this group's forming

Well, the warlord is very dependant on others for getting things done. A rogue might be more like what you're used to - you'll need teamwork to be at your most effective but you can still function on your own, somewhat. Maybe choose powers that can give you combat advantage over a foe without flanking.

Go for the rogue and then if you feel like it multiclass into the Warlord to snag some of their powers.
