Warmage - how balanced?

Greater Floating Disk

Is from Spell Compendium-4th level evocation-really nice spell. Fly because of the bump for being able to cast it is also 4th level for the warmage.

And if I were to play a Warmage, I'd be tempted to grab the feat that allows casters who can cast in armor to go up a category of armor, so that I could start off with chainmail and end up, later, clanking around in full plate while casting spells.

Its called Battle Caster, the one downside is they get so few feats, you are better off getting Mithral Full Plate.

While it's fun, just remember that Warmages only have light armor proficiency, so you're taking a massive Armor Check penalty if you dont take the proficiency feats or multiclass. Of course, it's not like any of the skills effected are generally used by a warmage, but you better not wear that armor near water. :p

Armor

Actually at 8th level they get medium armor, still no reason to go into melee with a warmage character. Let the tanks do what they do best. Ian.

It's still not going to help with that medium armor when you only have light proficiency, or that heavy armor when you only have medium proficiency.

One thing I think it WILL help with: if you're in full plate and carrying a shield, they're not likely to think you're a mage. :D

The reason to go into melee with a Warmage (or similar PC) is because you have to.

My current group is only 3 PCs large- thus, I'm in combat quite a bit.

Warmage

My warmage has had to go into melee too, but I avoid it when ever possible. Usually only to save another PC's life. Our group has 6 PC's and a good tank. We also have a hard striking opportunist DuskBlade & a Monk. There is no reason for me to venture into the front. That the difference between a group of three and six PC's iguess, Ian.

In case you haven't figured it out, Ian Demagi is the warmage player in the campaign.

In this group of 7 characters, the most effective PC in combat is the warmage. That's all well & good, I just now need to work on giving other PCs the spotlight in some other manner (creatures with energy resistance, the anti-warmage warmage, etc.).
That will be difficult for the group's wizard...

Oh those will be coming up.
The whole last session involved a lot more role-playing than average for this campaign.
I'd explain more, but that would ruin my fun :]
