warrior "types"

redwing

First Post
There are many different roles that warriors can fill in battle and these warriors can actually be of any class/race properlly trained with feats/skills and equiped with correct magical items (of course some are better than others). Of these, I have noticed:

the tank: lots of Con, made to absorb damage
the damage dealer/battering ram: lots of Str, made for dishing out the dam
skirmish: hit and run tactics
long range: hit them from far away
area control: trip, disarm, etc.

Any others that I may have missed?

I concur ... high AC = tank, high CON + HP = sponge, combined high AC + CON + HP = meat shield.

As for other types, you have the swashbuckler type - melee fighter with high DEX.

You had the same thought I did, except I was going to phrase the Mounted Fighter as a Skirmishing, Damage Dealing Tank.

Running a char that I based on a light cavalry model. By his party's standards, he's all of the above.

I've always been of the impression that a Tank was the warrior with both high AC and high HP, but as a drawback has sacrificed offensive power and mobility. Meat Shield was just another term for Tank, and I've never heard of the Sponge designation before. The whole point of the Tank was that he was the guy who was hard to kill, and would take it on the chin so the more frail members of the party didn't have to.

I came into this campaign after a few sessions had already been run. When the players heard there was a new PC coming the shouts rang in my ears "MEAT SHIELD! We need a MEAT SHIELD!".

The party was comprised of a Wilderness Rogue, a Druid, a Sorceror and a Ranger. So I made a plain-jane Fighter. And he has been the meat shield, absorbed enough damage in one days combat a few weeks ago to have TPKed the reast of the party. But I intended him from the beginning to be a mounted militia char, and even though he is the equivilant of 'light cav', he IS the meat shield.

He has high HP, decent AC even in Light Armor, and is handy with bastard sword and lance.

I am loving the Mounted Combat thang. It allows a char to be many things at once. :D
