Was I overplaying the creatures abilities?

You did fine. Just remind the party that when they had two melee characters charge the creature and attack it, it fell in one round.

I don't think this point can be stressed enough - if they had done that exact thing in the first round, there would be no discussion.

I too think you did the right thing. Even a PC with a INT of 3, from say a feeblemind, can and will fight normally, just not with spells and such. Creatures with less INT fight better than that. Lionesses hunt in packs, often surrounding the prey first. Look to the animal kingdom the next time your players say that such creatures would not fight that way cause they are too stupid.

...and, if the PC's continue to give you crap, tell them this is your world and the monsters are smarter here. They all have 200 INT. You are the DM and what the DM says goes, if that doesn't work, tell them they just slew the familar of a Balor, he is standing in front of them collecting the dead and he doesn't seem to be smiling :)

I'm just going to throw out a "me too" in agreeing with everyone- the mephit used his abilities and one tactic that worked for him- stay in the water and attack. This is fine. An int of 6 doesn't mean he's as stupid as a domestic turkey or anything- he's equivalent to a stupid human, but not one anywhere near the bottom of the bell curve.

Players problem, not yours. Int of 6 is plenty to realize the following things:

Water feels good
Opponents feel bad
Breath gets rid of opponents
Breath gets rid of bad feelings
Ow, that hurt
I know! I'll go to the water to feel good

If the tactic can be spelled out in 3 easy steps, Int of 6 can handle it. Perhaps the players should rethink their own Int scores.

6 int and you cant do this? Sure as hell you can, next thing people will start going Wyverns are too stupid with their 6 int to use their snatch and flyback attacks to pick people off the ground or off their horses and fly 100/200ft up and drop them one by one as easy kills before eating them.

You ran it perfectly imho, their own fault. Reanjr in the post above mine put it really well how it goes :D
