Was the 1E assassin ever playtested?

Of course. Those old characters could only attack once per minute! The new characters would crush them.

Heh.

Pray the 3d ed. characters don't blow their Surprise roll, though.

Especially if Weapon Specialisation is being used.

Those longbow specialists cranking out 6 shots per segment could ruin a 3.x PC's day pretty fast.

Okay... I don't understand what this means.

Compare the ability of 1st level fighter to kill another 1st level fighter within the rule set they were generated in. Figure out all the chances and damages inflicted as probabilities and then compare editions.

Hardly. A 1st level 1e 1st level fighter could survive for 2 minutes under attack. Where as a 3e 1st level fighter isn't likely to survive more then 30 seconds.

Combat does last a bit longer in 1e than 3e when counted in rounds. 3e PCs hit slightly more often. 3e damage and 3e HPs tend to be higher, but they roughly offset each other.

It is not such a big difference.

Yeah, organization is not the 1E books' strong suit. There are interesting little bits tucked all over the place.

True. But this is at least partially mitigated by the overall lower volume of rules that are inflicted on the reader.

AIR the way it was written, the 1e Assassin got hos % insta-kill whenever he got surprise on an opponent. I certainly recall my favourite NPC assassin insta-killing a PC that way. "You're riding along...Oops you're dead." In hindsight this was not the most fun thing for a player. :)
