Watchmen - still on

I saw this on an Alan Moore fansite:

Alan Moore

It's an article in which David Hayter discusses the possiblility of directing a feature film. It's dated the 5th of May.

I'm not too sure I like the plans of changing the ending no matter the reason.

IMO the only way to do Watchman right is a mini series. Too many character and plot deatails to leave out. I don't like the fact that He changed the ending.

I disagree with Hayter's statements about the ending. It doesn't have to be changed, just tweaked. You can show the destruction caused by news reports and inference. It won't have the same impact, but it will stay true to the story. I do agree that this would be done best as a mini-series. It will also have to be LONG to really work. Might even be done best as 2 or 3 movies. People are getting used to stories spread out over a few flicks (LotR, Star Wars, Matrix) so that might work if Hayter gets the budget.

Pardon me as I show my age, but I remember wayyyyy back in the 80s there were rumors afloat that Terry Gilliam had expressed interest in directing an animated film of Watchmen. Would he care about whether Hollywood would accept an ending? Probably not. Would anyone bankroll it? Probably not.

I would be very disappointed if the ending was changed. I remember reading Watchmen for the first time and being blown away by the ending. It was shocking, disturbing, and profound. The whole tone of the story would change if the ending did not stay intact.

I wonder if Mr. Hayter isn't just giving up on the original ending without even giving it a chance. I would imagine that after penning the two X-Men movies, he has a little bit of pull now. I think he should really push to do the original ending.
