[Way OT] Calling all architects... thinking of career change

Hi folks,
if there are any architects out there in ENWorld, I would like to seek a little advice. I'm seriously considering a change in careers from IT/Tech Training/Database Management to Architecture.

I'm thinking of the M.Arch (Master of Architecture). Unfortunately, there isn't a school of architecture in my city, Orlando. The closest one is in Tampa at USF. That said, I would rather go to school outside of Florida.

It seems that there are several pre-requisites I need to fulfill before I can even apply to a school. The most important pre-req is the portfolio. I'm going to spend the next year or so working on the portfolio.

Anyway... any advice would be appreciated with regard to schools and what to put into the portfolio.

Thanks,

I am not an architect, but an architecture student at the University of Cincinnati. I don't really know what to put into your portfolio, as I got here directly from high-school and that was not a requirement. But I can say that the school seems to get high marks from a number of sources consistently to make it worth checking out.

Yeah... I saw the survey of architecture schools put out by Design Intelligence. Cincy seems to be consistently ranked near the top.

What do you think of Cincinnati as a place to live?

Honestly, Cinci isn't the world's greatest place to live. It gets a big "eh" from me. It's actually rather boring...not a great deal to do. But I've lived here for so long that I may not really appreciate it like I should.

Cincinatti has a surprisingly good theater. Their symphony is also much better than you would expect. There is decent enough nightlife and the Dave & Busters there has Battletech pods.

Battletech pods rule.

BG: Dave & Busters is pretty cool. :)

...and thanks to everyone for the Cincy tips.

Any other architects or architecture students out there?

Cincinnati is a fine place to live while going to school. I don't live there, but we sometimes take weekend get-aways down there for fun, it's a short drive for us. Close to the Ohio River, you have Newport, KY riverfront activities just on the other side. Some good museums, good zoo. I can think of worse places to spend a few years in school.
