(Way OT) How bad is the heat wave in Europe?

Only water. Anything with sugar or sugarsubstitutes will only make you more dehydrated.

Cotton or wool, is preferable over any synthetic material.

Kind of but not completely true. For me, for example, plain water races through my system. I've got to have some kind of sugar in there to get my body to start absorbing. I find that Kool-aid watered to half-strength is about perfect for me.

As for synthetic materials, polyester is plain awful, but there are some synthetics that are quite good for that type of weather.

I was wondering if a native american could please post detailed instructions of a rain dance, i would like to perform one...

I'm one of those people who has only black in his closset (i'm no goth thank you very much), and i am still wearing long pants and a longsleeved shirt (rolled up above the elbows). Have to give the wageslaves what they expect to see ;-)

The Metro feels like a frikin microwave, especially when they turn on the heaters to max and then break the damn things so we were stuck with them all day at max settings.

The place i work at is one of those glass monstrosities, we do have decent airco, but for some rason our office is the only place in the entire building where the airco isn't working, last time i checked it was 24 degrees C, that's about my limit, when it gets to 25C i generally pack up and move to the server room where it's a constant 15C (Hmm...).

I'm now sitting at home in the kitchen, on the right of me an open door to the balcony, on the left a large fan that's running at high speed...

I want my cold weather back, wheee!!!

 Who would be stupid enough to do such a thing.

Plain wrong. Eat like you normally would, that is better for your system. (Unless you normally eat something that is heavy on fat, like burgers and fries, then this might be a good time to change your diet.)

Homer J. Simpson. :D But he also put boxes of frozen vegetables under his arms to stay cool too IIRC.

Hopefully noone will get far enough to need sports drinks to get the electrolytes back. If you really need electrolytes, Pedialyte (or whatever) might work tho bananas (high in potassium) help those with diarrhea IIRC. If anything, act like a desert animal would: be active when it's cooler, stay in the shade midday, stay reasonably hydrated, etc. I'd say stay away from salty foods if you can and eat fruit and other foods with water in them. Eat light during the heat like a snack and wait til it gets cooler to eat something heavy. Maybe the fitness advice of eating several small meals a day could work too.

As for cotton and wool vs. synthetics, I definitely agree with cotton but wool makes me itch and sweating makes it worse. Light colored and loose clothes in any case.

It's hot. Like REALLY hot, here in London. But that's not really the problem. The problem is the humidity. On Wednesday the air was so thick with water (and pollution) that I felt like I could hardly breathe!

This morning there was a cool breeze and everything was gorgeous, but it's got scorching and humid and icky again already.

The Fosaken One, Serpenteye, Darkness, and Edena:

I am doing pretty well, working on a few different things. Life has a few ups and downs right now, but that is normal enough.

I am surprised to learn that people are now raising grapes in Denmark. Have any of our other posters in Europe noticed similar changes to crops and local fauna? (Serpenteye, are grapes being grown commercially in Sweden?)

Here in the Chicago area, we had many warm summers through the past decade. It also seems that we do not get as much snowfall as compared with my childhood in the 1970s and early 1980s. (Snowmen are becoming an endangered species.)

It was a fairly cool evening for August tonight.

Here near Montpellier, it was 42°C (106 °F)wednesday. The translucid plastic roof of the toolshed has literaly burned during the solstice : it's twisted and blackened now... As for the tree and the garigue, it looks like we are already in autumn : the leaf are falling, and it's hard to spot something green... It's somewhat a miracle that there isn't more fire...

Hey there, William, Forsaken One, Aloisius.
Nice to hear from you all.

I was very surprised to learn grapes are now grown in Denmark. Or even corn, which is a warm weather crop.
The shed roof blackening and twisting? Now that's hot. That's really hot.

Those were nice Dragonlance pictures. I wanted to thank you, Forsaken One, for posting the link to those. Thanks much!

I'm writing here from Zurich/Switzerland where the Streetparade is taking place today.

This means basically that anywhere from 500,000-1,000,000 people will be on the street at 37°C, and most of them aren't used to it.

I'm actually at work, since we have AC here, and not at home, so I'm putting in some overtime. I tried to buy a ventilator yesterday, but no luck, their sold out practically anywhere, just as portable AC units. The shops are just not up to the demand...

Our temperature records aren't broken, yet. Water levels are low but not critically, except in smaller streams. A lot of the mountains are losing their white caps. The farmers are more than worried and prices on vegetables are rising. The animals have problems, especially fish. Some Atomic plants had to reduce their output, otherwise the hot outflow from the cooling water would be above the limit allowed, I heard on the news, that a german one had to shut down completely.
