(Way OT) How bad is the heat wave in Europe?

It was officially Hottest Day Ever in UK yesterday.

Yeah right, thunder storms, overcast and chilly where I was. As usual the news thinks if the south was hot then the whole of the UK had the hottest day on record.

It cooled down somewhat here in Aachen (Aken? Aix-La-Chapelle?), Germany. Somewhat - as in: not really.
Doing any kind of work on the PC is quite a burden. One of my fellow TOGCians can barely work, let alone concentrate - he's virtually his own river (he is using towels to catch all the sweat, but each towel lasts only for oh so few minutes, before he's got to change them...).

Still no rain. The rivers are running dry (don't know about the Elbe specifically...).

Tell that to the Muslims!! :p

As an interesting note, I remember my medical flatmate telling me that rickets is a big problem for Muslim women in the UK. In Oz and countries which get a lot of sunshine they’re fine b/c they get enough sunshine on their face, but in the UK and other countries which are overcast a lot of the time it can cause significant problems.

I flew back to Oslo yesterday, quite all right, 25 degrees , compared to London it was an immense relief from that burning hellhole with no AC, no wet towels, just immense suffering under the burning sun... phew.

I also seem to have heard that Russia had around 500 forrest
fires. They seem relatively at ease compared to Spain and France.

About two weeks ago something exceptional happened to ocean temperatures off the U.S. east coast. Temperatures dropped by 10 degrees F. in something like 24 hours. That's the fastest drop that anybody can remember, and the coldest water temperatures for this time of year.

The timing roughly coincides with the beginning of the exceptional heat in Europe. I'm not making predictions or saying one way or the other but a shift in the North Atlantic Current would be an indicator of sudden climate change.

( "All the evidence indicates that most long-term climate change occurs in sudden jumps rather than incremental changes."
http://www.esd.ornl.gov/projects/qen/transit.html ).

It will be very interesting (as in the proverb; may you live in interesting times) to see how the weather situation develops in Europe this autumn.

If we had a better idea of what the melt-rates are in the Greenland ice sheet we might be able to make better predictions about some of the macro-climate changes in Northern Europe.

Greenpeace placed a gauge(?), you know the thing that shows how high the water level is, well they placed a gauge in the middle of the elbe river.
This gauge shows the highest level during the flood not long ago. It's something about 9 meters. The actual level is ... tada 0.70 meters. You can cross the elbe river without getting wet pants in some places. The upper rhine (border swiss/germany) isn't much better off. Shipping is canceled there.

Errr, sorry Hackenslash. The Muenster Cheese (smelling a bit ...) isn't a special product of the city Muenster (founded as Monasterium 793 by order of Charlemagne).
Muenster is also a word for a kind of big church (something like a cathedral but not a place where a bishop resides) in german speaking countries and france(? elsace?). It is derived from monastery. So monks produced cheese and it was named after these big monastery churches I think.
Another Name in Germany is Limburger Cheese after the city of Limburg.
Enjoy your meal :D .

BYE

[Edit: Update]
Muenster Cheese is made in southwest germany near Freiburg (Fribourg) in the so called Muenster-Tal (-valley). Hence the name.

It's a point rating Bagpuss, not an overall aggregate. :)

It was 101 F ca 37 C in my back garden yesterday. I really miss Belfast weather, *sigh*

If we've lost the Atlantic Conveyor we're in big trouble

Hi all! :)

Outdoors it has been pretty good here (because Belfast generally has a cooling breeze blowing), but indoors it can get a bit sticky; and no one uses air conditioning here because 350+ days of the year you would never need it.

Suffice to say I really noticed the summer temperature difference in London compared to Belfast (when I was there last August). So I pity anyone having to suffer the Underground at the moment - it must be like a sauna down there.

Thanks for the info...

Interesting....Well it certainly tastes good where ever it's from, thanks for the info. and hope you get the river levels back up soon in Germany or they will probably stop making all the fine wines they are noted for. Cheers !!:)
