D&D (2024) We’ll be merging the One D&D and D&D forums shortly

I'm calling it that from now on, but man, my thumbs are gonna get sore from typing it on my phone....
I'll just cut and paste whenever I want to talk about (We'll be introducing a new rule soon. On this forum, people may only refer to the upcoming core rulebooks in full using the phrase "The 2024 Revisions of the 2014 Dungeons & Dragons Core Rulebooks Which Are Not A New Edition But Might Be A New Edition But Are Not, Honest, Guv, And Are Compatible With The 2014 Core Rulebooks Except For The Bits Which Aren't, But We'll Have A Document Somewhere But It Won't Be Called A Conversion Document As That Would Imply An Edition Which Needs Conversion From Or To And As We All Know Nobody Uses The Word Edition Any More Because That Stunts Sales During The Lead-Up Like How Pathfinder Says Remaster Not 2.5, As If You Thought It Was D&D 5.5 You Wouldn't Buy Curse Of Strahd Any More And We Like It When You Buy Curse Of Strahd (Let's Face It, It's Our Best Book, At Least So Far) But This Is Not a New Edition And Please Don't Call It 5.5 or 6E And Yes We Called It One D&D For A While But Don’t Call It That Either. That Was Just A Joke To Confuse You, We All Had A Good Laugh, And Really We'd Rather You Didn't Even Call It 5E To Be Honest As We Just Want People To Buy Everything Labelled 'D&D' Which Is Why We Don't Brand Things With Setting Labels Any More Which Is Good Business Sense Really So It's Just Dungeons & Dragons, Right? Got It? Stop With This Edition Nonsense, Editions No Longer Exist, This Is The Way [[I Is Mandalore]] (but please buy it you have to as it’s a new edition not really kthxbye).

I may limit myself to refering to it once per post though....hehe.

So what was the point of all this? Should we just assume that whenever big WotC decides to roll out a new way to take our money, nearly the entire community, despite significant protest on this very site, are ultimately just going to roll over? What a bleak and conformist world view that is.

Well, I have been to the fae world and I AM hiring a bunch of Trolls to go out and collect the old PHB's (I may have made a mistake, I didn't specify what edition) and replace them with the 'new and improved' 2024 version (by force if necessary).

They are magic so can find them no matter where you've hidden them. So...yes, they'll go and replace all the PHB's out there and replace them with the 2024 versions. Yes, we will go and take the old one from you and replace it for free!!!

I mean, that's what everyone wants...right!!???

You can thank me later.

(PS: In case anyone is worried that I [or anyone] actually have the capacity to do this...or cannot separate fantasy from reality...the above post is actually just joking around...it is not actually going to happen).

My body is now half 5e, half OneDND. I...I am a monster

I have seen at least three instances in just the past few months where someone actually meant 3.5e, PF1e, or some other edition, and simply neglected to specify. It's not pedantry if someone is actually asking for details on how something works.

I know this sort of misses the point but, if you go to a DnD forum, and post a thread asking about game rules... is it really anybody's fault except your own that you get answers about DnD when you wanted Pathfinder answers?

Like, sure, if someone just came onto a forum and asked "how does spellcasting work?" and they wanted to know about 3.5's Vancian Casting compared to the system 5e uses, then they need to qualify that to get the correct information. But also... it isn't a big deal? The vast majority of people will be able to figure out fairly quickly if the information they are receiving isn't making sense, and their responses will often clue in the other people, who realizing that there is miscommunication might ask clarifying questions.

Sure, it means that not everyone will be instantly on the same page, but... the vast majority of us deal with this already, in other products and services we use. This isn't a big deal.

What does significant protest on this site even mean? I've seen like... twenty people max. 40,000 people participated in the survey, Treantmonk was consistently getting 20K to 30K views on his playtest videos (and he was often positive about the playtest). Even if only half of those numbers end up getting the new book... the protests on this site still won't outweigh that.

All fun aside, I’m hoping for “D&D 2024” or D&D 24.

Anything with just 5e misses all the material and systems published for 5e by other publishers. D&D 2014 and D&D 2024 are both 5e systems the same way Tales of the Valiant and Level Up Advanced 5e are both 5e systems. 5e is its own independent platform now and it doesn’t matter where the actual term 5e came from.

So, to keep things specific and useful, D&D 2024 works for me.

Did I say it was a big deal?

I am simply saying that having simple, straightforward, descriptive names is useful. 5.5e is all of those, while also being precedented. Many of the proposed alternatives are not. Hence, I believe "5.5e" will predominate. Because it is useful to have a name, and simpler names are generally more useful than complex ones unless that complexity adds value. E.g., surnames are far too much complexity for casual conversation, but rather important when (say) at a high school where there may be several dozen "John"s or "Mary"s or what have you.

That's why I preferred 5.50(e) when I thought they were actually going to label it something like '5e, 50th Anniversary Printing" or something like that. But it seems they are just going to call it "5e" and try to pretend that it is perfectly identical.

I hope that's clear.
I would love to see the tag for this

I'm talking about the people here, hence, "this site".
