D&D 5E We should domesticate Rust Monsters

That would be a cool setup for an adventure, the bad guy fled into the old iron mine, notoriously infested with rust monsters ! The guards refuse to intervene there. Are you bad enough dudes to go almost naked in pursuit of evil ?

Really seems like a job for druids. No metal shields or armor, shillelagh cudgel in hand, and claws/fangs & summons the rest of the time.

Except for the fact the druid planted it. You think the wizard is opposed to armor? They need their canned-meat-shield. Druids are more likely to drop rust monsters on a town getting too big for its charter. "Encroach on the forest? Guess it's time for some 'finding out'"
How bags how the druids fund their conservation programs. Planting rust monsters and then getting paid to remove the rust them

I disagree. Iron ore would be like, oh, beets with iron or steel metal being refined sugar. That's why they're so eager to meet adventurers. They have candy!
Yeah, I'm coming around on this - I guess the whole reason they rust things is to eat the rust, so iron ore would basically already be in edible form. Much of it is still solid rock though, which is why they prefer to go for the refined metals that they can easily break down into powdery rust.

An adventure where you had to clear out a mine overrun with rust monsters would be crazy. It would definitely drive pretty much anyone besides the arcane magic users mad within a short time as all their metal armor and weapons get rusted away. It would definitely encourage creative play and creative inventories...
I kind of want to run this in a system where the players can't just all build monks to get around these issues. It'd be fun in Shadowdark, where the PCs probably won't die (unless they run into something deep in that requires weapons to deal with, once their best weapons are gone), but which will require a lot of out of the box thinking.

We really need to know who fast they breed. You can't create a proper bioweapons program made of Rust Monsters without good stats on their reproduction rate.
It would be hilarious to have the equivalent of an Alien movie, complete with corporate jerks looking for military applications, but using rust monsters instead. Most of the franchise provide game-ready plots to do just that.
