One of my D&D friends' family was ultra-religious, so we had to smuggle D&D books in and out of his house in the Top Secret™ game box--because it was okay to play a spy game where you killed normal people on accident, but not a devil-worshipping game where you killed imaginary monsters.

I had a friend with that exact problem. His mom would let him play any RPG under the sun except D&D, which was just.. bizarre.

Of course we easily solved the 'problem' of anyone's parents not liking D&D by simply lying to them about what we were doing.

It was a bizarre time, and I'm glad it's well behind us.

I was an adult so I could play when I wanted. But I remember when I was in nursing school and on my break I was reading a gaming book. My patient care instructor saw me and told me that I should put it away that no one will hire a nurse who was involved in that stuff.

Never experienced any of that. I wasn't even aware it was a thing until a decade after it was no longer a thing.

I didn't see anything about how we won the war. Just that we won the war.

Does anyone else think that there's a war on cigarettes effect here:

Saying it's bad makes people think it's good?

I found out a few years later that some of the older kids I played D&D with at first actually WERE--in fact--"satanists". Despite their various attempts to cajole or force me into their sphere of influence psychologically and sexually (via death threats face-to-face and striking me in the groin with knife-hand blows), I was able to avoid them with parental support and found true friends with whom to game. Some of those who preyed upon me later made it into the news with references to the occult and crime (not gaming) and I heard about it second-hand (which explained their behaviors toward me years before).
