Weak X-Mas for D&D?

Is it just me or does this seem like a weak Christmas for D&D? There's not a whole lot of interesting stuff (at least for me) out this season. The only thing I'm interested in is the Spell Compendium and I don't expect to be able to find it before X-mas. The last DDM set came out a while ago. Bah! Hum-bug!

At first I wasn't too excited about the Spell Compendium but the more I think about it, the more I think I should get it. Other items I'm looking forward to getting either as gifts or for myself:

Shadowspawn's Guide to Sanctuary
Game of Thones d20
Underdark miniatures

I think our 'Christmas' comes the week after GenCon when all these big major releases hit the stores after debuting there.

Yeah, it doesn't seem like WotC makes an effort to have significant releases timed for holiday gift-buying. It's not just something that's happening this year.

*looks at Spell Compendium sitting on table next to self*

Uh, do you live someplace well away from normal distribution channels? I bought mine at my FLGS last week, and it's into mass-market bookstores by now.

But yeah, the big season for gaming is late-summer, when everything big is released at Gen Con.

My understanding is that new products don't do very well when released in late November, early December in the hobby industry.. Companies pretty much avoid releasing new products during that time period unless it is either a product that will have solid sales whenever it's released, or part of a line that requires regular releases.

I suspect that's because most people don't buy the new products for themselves because they are busy buying for other people. People don't tend to buy them as gifts, unless specifically asked for by the intended recipient (and there are fewer of those, because word of mouth hasn't had time to spread).

Print copies of Mythic Earth from RPGNow? Or any of the other dozens of innovative pdf books that aren't in local game stores yet?

Commissioned art by an artist from our very own forums, to give yourself or a friend a personalized illustration of their character?

A savings fund to pay for Gen Con 2006?
