Weapon/Character Size Issues

is a halfling-sized longspear still a reach weapon?
if its still as long as a human-sized reach weapon, why is the damage lower?
or could someone explain how reach weapons work for small-sized characters?

and

does a halfling-sized longbow have a 100ft range increment? (as listed in the PHB)

also

say a human without a reach weapon attacks a huge-sized giant who has the combat reflexes feat and natural reach of 3, the giant wins initiative and 'readys' an attack. the human moves in to attack, when he enters the first square of the giants reach, the giant makes his 'readied' attack. then as the human moves one square closer, he provokes an attack of opportunity for moving out of a threatened square. then, due to the combat reflexes feat, the giant gets a second AoOpportunity when the human moves his final square.
Am i right in all this? does advancing into the giant really provoke 2 attacks of opportunity?

thanks for your thoughts,

Yes.

Because it's a smaller size category ;)

Yes. If this bothers you, you could perhaps implement the system from Savage Species, where a change in size category increases or decreases range increment by 25%.

No.

Combat Reflexes and Additional Attacks of Opportunity: If you have the Combat Reflexes feat you can add your Dexterity modifier to the number of attacks of opportunity you can make in a round. This feat does not let you make more than one attack for a given opportunity, but if the same opponent provokes two attacks of opportunity from you, you could make two separate attacks of opportunity (since each one represents a different opportunity). Moving out of more than one square threatened by the same opponent in the same round doesn’t count as more than one opportunity for that opponent. All these attacks are at your full normal attack bonus.

Regarding the halfling-sized longspear (under 3.5 rules), the answer is really "the rules don't say one way or another". The only longspear-reach commentary is made for Medium-sized spears, which some folks feel obliged to apply for all sizes (including Tiny, Diminutive, etc.) That's unlikely to have been the intent.

This is one aspect of the glitchy overhaul that 3.5 made to weapon sizing. Under 3.0 rules, halflings could definitely not use longspears with reach.

Because someone in WoTC feels that bigger is better and that smaller get's squished. You may also note that Trip is really mechanically not a trip at all, but a modified grapple where you don't try to unbalance the target and make it fall so much as you attempt to throw the target to the ground.

Apparently.

Really?

Reach Weapons: Most creatures of Medium or smaller size have a reach of only 5 feet. This means that they can make melee attacks only against creatures up to 5 feet (1 square) away. However, Small and Medium creatures wielding reach weapons threaten more squares than a typical creature. In addition, most creatures larger than Medium have a natural reach of 10 feet or more.

Melee Attacks: With a normal melee weapon, you can strike any opponent within 5 feet. (Opponents within 5 feet are considered adjacent to you.) Some melee weapons have reach, as indicated in their descriptions. With a typical reach weapon, you can strike opponents 10 feet away, but you can’t strike adjacent foes (those within 5 feet).

And, the coup de grace ...

Reach Weapons: Glaives, guisarmes, lances, longspears, ranseurs, spiked chains, and whips are reach weapons. A reach weapon is a melee weapon that allows its wielder to strike at targets that aren’t adjacent to him or her. Most reach double the wielder’s natural reach, meaning that a typical Small or Medium wielder of such a weapon can attack a creature 10 feet away, but not a creature in an adjacent square. A typical Large character wielding a reach weapon of the appropriate size can attack a creature 15 or 20 feet away, but not adjacent creatures or creatures up to 10 feet away.
