Weapon Finesse

This makes no sense to me. Why does weapon finesse function on all light weapons and then rapiers and chains?

Why limit it to those two medium weapons? Is there an expanded list anywhere? Has anyone ever house ruled this to allow all D6 medium weapons that are slashing or piercing?

It's a schtick thing. Swashbucklers are Dex bunnies, not Str tanks, and they gots ta have their rapiers.

Something similar must obviously apply to spiked chain gimps.

I made up a Martial Finesse feat that allows Dex to substitute for Str for attack rolls, for any one weapon your size or smaller. Prereqs are BAB +4 (effectively), Weapon Focus in chosen weapon.

I think the only d6 medium weapon left is the scimitar. And theres one simple answer to this I guess: vorpal weapon must be slashing.

Weapon finess allow a character to gain another advantage from an ability score that already plays a lot. Reflex saves, initiative, many valuable skills. Adding to hit with a melee weapon is yet another advantage. If you have to choose between eventually getting a vorpal weapon or having a high dexterity that allow you to hit more easilly in melee, maybe you'll think about it twice.

The fact tha vorpal weapon is not available to a finessable weapon makes weapon finesse a little less desirable. In other words balance things out.

Bladed Gauntlet, Warfan, Sickle, Throwing Axe, Hand Axe, Halfling Kama, Kukri, Kama, and technically, a Whip Dagger. All useable with Weapon Finesse, to name a few.

Technicly, whip can also. It can also be keen, and be merciful and do 1d2+1d6 real damage.

Spiked chains are exotic weapons... that's why.
What about the rapier? I dunno.

Good point, out of the previous list, only the hand axe/throwing axe doesn't need an exotic weapon proficiency feat.
