Weapon Special Abilities

This should probably be asked in the Rules area, but here goes. Can a weapon be given additional special abilities after it has been created? Say, for example, the part finds a +1 keen longsword. Later on, could mighty cleaving or frost be added to the weapon? Either way, does this change between 3.0 and 3.5? Could make things interesting if it is allowed...

Yes, it should.

Yes, it can.

No, it hasn't.

Hope that helps.

glass.

of course, ask your DM.

but the answer is yes normally.
edit: this is where many DMs will insert plot hooks or quests or such to help make the item, find a crafter, or otherwise spice things up.

Cool, thanks. Now, as the DM I just have to go back and read the rulebooks and see what they say.
so in your case figure out the wheres and whatfors.

going from +2 (+1 keen) to a +3 weapon(+1 keen frost).. means what?

+2 weapon = 8000 gp
+3 weapon = 18000gp

difference of 10000gp.

now if you want you could use the 50% sell back rule for material cost meaning only 4000gp for the +2.. which gives you a 14000gp difference.

now you just need to find someone who can craft the item.

are the materials special? mithril, admantine, cold iron, silver, etc?

they have costs associated with them in the DMG too.

edit: and if Xp are involved they cost 5gp per xp.

Say what? That's the price for selling the +2 weapon and buying a +3 weapon straight up. If you want to add powers to an existing weapon, it's an extra-ordinarily silly way to go about it.

sure it is.

but this is being asked in General.

if he wanted the real answer he'd ask in the Rules forum.

just remember Steve Miller is DMing the pre revised edition so answer accordingly.;)
