The mechanics need to be there because there is no other playable way to make those distinctions appear where they need to in actual play, with regard to real guns. Some of these may be useful in SW (because they're showing up in SG-1 with regard to energy weapons), but that's conjecture on my part. Regardless, a book like MAG is very much in keeping with the espionage genre, because espionage cares about guns. I don't really thnk SW, as a genre, gives a rat's patootie, so giving me detailed blaster listings actually breaks SOD for me. But that's just me.
