Weapons of Legacy (buy or not?)

Hi,

Has anyone looked into the example of the Weapons of Legacy out in the WOTC previews. What do you think about it?

It looks interesting, and I will buy it. It sort of kindled an idea about a "destined for great deeds" type campaign, where one PC gets a weapon of legacy, one has a funky bloodline, the third one's god has a personal interest him and the fourth one is the last of the ninja, or something. Would probably need a lot of work, though, for every PC would have to stand out as individuals and get their share of spotlight in the narrative...

Sounds kinda like fantasy superheroes, really.

But yeah, it looks cool. And I'll get it.

Interesting? Yes. Will I buy it? It's likely that I will, but I'll be looking at it first before I make any decision. A book that isn't page upon page upon page of PrCs and feats, it's a step in the right direction towards getting my $.

I'll most likely be buying it. It looks very interesting, although I don't see where the penalties on attack rolls, saving throws and skill points come in... I'm still wondering how they're going to rule those and why...

Perhaps I should elaborate my decision a bit; I already have my own rules for intelligent weapons that progress with levels, along with several options presented in official books. It takes me longer to incorporate "generic" magic item flavor into my campaigns than to come up with my own. Furthermore, I really dislike the rules presented in the recent book preview on WotC site. Thus, my decision.

The price you pay for this artifact is a steep one. Attack and Save penalties. HP and Skill point penalties.
This is kind of forced. You carry the weapon, you level up. "Bing". Attack penalty, Skill point penalty etc.
A different approach was done by Monte Cook and his take on intelligent weapons: you feed them with EP and they level up and get more powers.
You can chose not give EP or to give them all EP you earn. It is in your hand.
The Item on the other hand has no difined path to level up. The (or better: you or/and the Player) can chose which abilities the item will take. One of the PCs in my Group, a Dwarf, has an intelligent Dwarven Waraxe. He devotes 25% of his EP for this Item. So far there are nor power issues.
But back to the Legacy Items.
Another take on this kind of Item was done in the Midnight Campaign Setting. It is called Convenent Item. They gain powers as you gain Levels, but you do not have to "invest" penalties.
I will definetly look this book up in FLGS.
