Also keep in mind the "get it now" factor.

Now a days the pdfs of a product often come before the books are sold, and you can them instantly. Some people are willing to pay a little extra. to get the product right now.

I think there is little doubt that all PDF files, regardless of price, are targeted at the 'instant gratification' consumer ;)

Why one, rather than the other?

The thing is, what few pdfs I use, I use by the page, not by the word. I find the specific pages I need, and print them for reference at the table. How much use (and how much further cost I incur in use) depends more upon the page count than the word count.
