The strangest source for inspiration I've ever had was probably Squirrel Nutkin by Beatrix Potter, which inspired a horror scenario (and this was long, long before Nutkinland). To this day, none of my players have any idea where I got the idea for Old Brown, the last, terrifying manifestation of a pagan god on the wane. His followers all dead, his rites and even his very name long forgotten, Old Brown had degenerated into an animalistic, predatory spirit.
