You never have customers until your product is out. By then, it's too late.
Ultimately, this is why business is risky. You have to just go for it eventually. But never confuse gamers with customers until they've actually bought something. Just because a gamer calls something kewl when he hears about it doesn't mean he'll spend real cash on it when it's available.
