We its official. The Virtual TableTop is announced at D&DXP. Good for Wizards. Glad to see them going for it. However it doesn't sound that good for game store owners, esp ones that only/mainly carry WotC products.

What is your reaction?

Umm... The VT was announced like months ago... Get with the program man! ;)

But how is this bad for Game stores... Especially if they're still selling WoTC stuff?

It's official: It doesn't matter how late to the game you get, you can still over-react like a number of people did when the announcement was first made. :p

The Virtual Tabletop has been no secret ever. There have been many upset it took this long to come to fruition.

But to answer the question a little better: I think this will be good for store owners.

IF the people playing have been transitioning to wanting digital products, and not buying the books to begin with because they can get them in digital form, then the store owners have a bunch of expensive unsold product on their hands...

So if WoTC shifts focus of what it sells physically to things people will actually be tempted to buy- that means more sales for the store owners.

IF WoTC is doing what I think it's doing, then I think it's a good plan with benefits for everyone involved.

How is it not good for store owners? Personally, D&D is a social game, the chance to get together with other people and interact. I've done VTT before and it's been ... less than satsifying let's just say.

It seems that WotC is coming out with a lot of products that would be better for a store than just books, like the board games, cards, etc. that also can't be bought with DDI.

Because the game is dead, at least in the real world. I read it on this very forum a coupe of days ago. :)

But apparently WotC is tricksy. From these posts we can uncover that they will still exist in the shaows of the virtual world. Apparently Heroes of Shadow isn't a sourcebook, it's the autobiography of one Mike Mearls. I was looking forward to it, but alas, he pre-ruined it based on subject matter. :)

Well it's official 4e is going online. Even though 4e was suppose to have a VT since launch, but for some reason it's now somehow a problem. The fact that the VT is a poor replacement for an actual table top is irrelevant. Irrelevant, I tell you!

There was an ad for the VT at the back of the 4e PHB.

I like the idea of a VT (especially since I grew up in a small town without many players), but I'm probably not going to use it except maybe to get some of my more leaving-the-apartment challenged friends hooked on D&D and coming over for a game. Or to teach my overly scheduled friends the rules online instead of having to come over.

Besides, if the internet has taught us anything, it's that everything is more fun if you can be naked while you do it.

FWIW I'd argue that Amazon did more to hurt game stores than the VT ever will.

I'm interested in seeing what they produce, but I've been using d20 Pro for months, so it's not exactly anything I've been missing. I have a DDI subscription, but if they require my players to buy one, I can tell you right now my group won't use it.
