D&D 5E Well played WOTC (or Free RPG Day 2015)

Now mind you I do have an actual gaming shop about 45 minutes away by public transport but they do not support AL.

Oh, I wasn't discrediting your statement at all. I just know around here you have to cover all the bases. If I didn't point out no FLGS means no AL or Free RPG Day someone else would. That's all.

And do you think WotC should give them products to give away on Free RPG Day?

I don't think it works like that. Stores sign up for Free RPG Day with Impressions Game Distribution Services. Likewise, companies that want to donate products do so by giving them to Impressions (I believe), who passes them out to the stores that sign up, depending on the sign-up level that each store pays for. The stores and the companies don't coordinate directly.

So I guess those of us who don't have a store anywhere close are screwed eh?

All those adventures mean nothing when you can't access to them. Not a very smart move.

No store means no Free RPG Day either, so that really is a terrible argument in this thread.

The debate isn't about a specific store, it's about WOTC supporting and advertising their product.

As for the advertising angle....

Is there a reasonable chance that significant numbers of folks going to brick-and-mortar stores for Free RPG Day *don't* know that D&D 5e exists? If not, then it isn't really a major advertising opportunity, in general. D&D doesn't need a general name-recognition boost with this population - it seems to me that they are among the most likely to have already bought a D&D product recently. Wouldn't WotC's advertising dollars be better spent reaching folks who probably haven't bought recently?

As for the support angle...

There's an argument that the game could use more support, sure. But is one small product on Free RPG Day going to be a major element in addressing that? If you aren't satisfied with their support, wouldn't you rather see them spend their effort on something more substantial?

Free RPG day is great for smaller products, or for games that have a hard time getting the word out about their existence. D&D isn't that kind of game.

You are right. But go tell Marvel and DC not to offer books on Free Comic Book day because they don't need the advertising.

As for support. Yes I would rather see them come out with something more substantial. Unfortunately besides the 3 core books that hasn't happened in a year. I'll take a Free RPG Product over a year of no product any day.

Quick note...

The D&D Adventurers League now supports online play. The game you play needs to be visible to the public (not to play, but to watch). There is more information in the Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/onlineadventureleague/

And you can gain access to the adventures without a local store. The one real requirement is that you play the games in a public space. At present it's still easier to partner with a store to get the adventures, but there's no actual reason the store has to be local. You just need to let the store know the DCI numbers of those participating each week so they can schedule it, and they can give you the adventures. (The advantage for the store is that the numbers count towards their WPN numbers, which can give them extra privileges from Wizards).

If you need help finding a participating store, contact your Local Co-ordinator of the D&D AL. Or the Regional Co-ordinator, if you don't have a LC.

Now, I know this still doesn't help *everyone*, but it's a much wider release than what it originally was.

Cheers!

You are right. But go tell Marvel and DC not to offer books on Free Comic Book day because they don't need the advertising.

They don't need it for *general* advertising. They don't need the Marvel and DC names lifted.

Look at what they did for 2015:

Marvel had an intro to specific storylines/books - Secret Wars and the All New, All Different Avengers.

DC had a compilation of shorts supporting their new Batman, Superman, and Darkseid War stories.

Both companies have major changes they needed supported. Does D&D currently have that? If they did have that, would they be best served joining Free RPG Day (which is clearly an oft-forgotten day with perhaps minimal reach) when they have GenCon coming in a little over a month?

I'll take a Free RPG Product over a year of no product any day.

I'm not sure about that "no product" - Princes of the Apocalypse came out this year, and its player's companion was already free on their website, as I am sure others have already noted.

It may not be product you want, but that's a different issue.
