Well this was scary as hell

I came out of the house once to find our neighbors' two Rottweiler's chasing our cat. They grabbed it by the neck and flung him. I chased off the two Rotties (not really hard, and not much bravery on my part, mind you) and the cat was mostly okay. I did give our neighbors the big what-for.

When will people learn that all these breeds of dog are the result of centuries of inbreeding, and no matter what people say, there's bound to be some instability? Give me a mutt any day, at the least it might have some genetic diversity...

I hope she's feeling better.

I have no idea if pepper spray is a good or bad idea, but if the neighbors have unleashed and agressive dogs, it's certainly better than any alternative I can think of .

Not sure where you live but there might be a leash law in your area. Check in on it. If this is the case then you need to inform them to follow this law to the letter from now on. It sounds mean, but your family is more important than their feelings. Some people whine about how certain breeds get picked on, but it seems that those breeds tend to make the news more than others. Rotts and Pitts and top news. We've had a problem with a neighbor who has a Pitt that runs loose in the neighborhood without a lease and recently he tried to attack a kid and went after a mailman too. I'm of the mind that they should be leashed. Bottom line, if they chaed your wife, maybe you should inform the police to warn them. Even though you give them a lecture about it they still need to hear it from a public official. Gives your warning more meaning and makes it official.

Luckily it's not our neighborhood. It's about 4 to 5 miles away, in another part of the town. She's not going to go back.

Make a report to the police and animal control in your area. They most likely know of the dogs or will keep an eye out for them.

Getting something to defend herself is a good idea just in general. If she doesn't like sprays a boat horn works well. "Use noise to disorient your foe." That was Sun Tzu or "Tactics of Mistake" I forget where. We used it in a superhero game once, it was fun. :)

Never heard of a Lab attacking anyone, although if it was a lab-pit mix, that's different...

Rottwielers are like NFL linebackers - solid chucks of dog that can knock you over even if they just tap you...

Glad your wife is okay, reveal!

it's good that she's ok. But if she is going to go for another 14 mile walk after this. Or a 2 mile walk, for that matter, I would insist on her taking a can of mace. They work on dogs and work on attacking men as well. You can go down to the police station and get one from them, I believe. If they will not sell them, they should be able to tell you where to get one.

My wife has one, we looked for a month or so in different stores trying to find one. Couldn't. A friend advised us to go to the police, they were happy to sell her one. I feel a bit better knowing she has it with her.

Dogs like to chase things that run.

I was chased by 3 dogs a few years ago until one got close enough behind me i ended up kicking it in the head as it was getting ready to bite the back of my calf (almost noticed that too late) at least it seemed that was whya he was goign for, that dog and his buddies were just out being jerks however as that was enouigh to send the three of chasing someone else whom they didin't hurt but harassed ( i kept an eye on them till they moved on).

As kids my brother and i would ride our bikes across a neighborhood to get to a fishing pond and a small group of dogs would hassle us every time. well everytime until my brother whipped one with his fishing pole as we sped past. the dogs would start to chase us but hold up well short of gettign close.

Unattended dogs can be dangerous. Even if they don't intend severe bodily harm they can still hurt folks in the sort of rough and tumble play they do with each other when no people they respect are about.

My wife is looking into either pepper spray or one of those hypersonic repellent devices. Anyone have any experience with either of theses?

I have no idea but the hypersonic repellent doesn't sound like it would work on a human.
