I was ambivalent to 3E and unsure about it, but didn't feel negatively toward it, nor was I particularly eager about it. I had just gotten the hang of 2nd Edition AD&D and planning a campaign with it. I was pleasantly surprised when I did decide to buy the Player's Handbook and check it out. I ended up altering my campaign plans a bit to run a 3rd Edition game.

I'd still be quite willing to play or run 2E again though, and I still like 2nd Edition, but 3.0 (the only true 3rd Edition) is my favorite. :p

I'd been out of RPGs fro a while. I ran an epic Earthdawn campaign that was so successful that everything we tried after felt like an anticlimax (even Earthdawn, itself). meanwhile i got married moved across the continent, and then 3.0 came out. I bought the PHB, the DMG and the much maligned Scarred lands creature collection (i don't know why I didn't buy the MM). My best friend did the same. i read the books I had. looked at character creation and the monster stat blocks and realized that I had, somehow, become too stupid to play D&D. My best friend came to the same conclusion. A few more years (6?) went by and I had the itch to play something and I picked up a simpler D20 variant (True20) and we've been using it ever since.

Truthfully, though, i never really liked 1e, even when i was playing it all the time. Too many rules seemed (to me) arbitrary and designed to limit fun- but it was what we were playing, and nobody was interested in a change. I never played 2cnd- the cover art really turned me off. i may very well buy fourth, because I like to read RPGs (even 3.x) but i seriously doubt I will ever play D&D- or any other game with elves, ever again.

Nah ... I had been out of the rpg scene for a while ... I disliked 2e when it came out, tried it a few times afterwards, and STILL disliked it. But 3e was not so bad, nor 3.5 ....

From the previews, there were only a few things (e.g., barbarians as ragers) that I disliked. Upon buying the books, I found a few more things I disliked (e.g, the handling of specialist wizards). However, I was not disappointed about switching. I was primarily disappointed with with the majority of WOTC rules supplements (same thing with 3.5). Thankfully, there were many third party companies, especially Green Ronin, to fill the gap.

I wasn't playing D&D when 3.0 came out, so I missed the announcement. I had played some OD&D and AD&D before, just a few times and several years earlier. When I became interested in RPG again, 3.0 had been published for a year already. I immediately found it superior to the earlier editions I had known.

Ditto! :D

I was enthusiastic at the announcement of 3.5 revision. I was the one who pushed the group forward to switch to it, and I started running a 3.5 campaign in parallel with our 3.0 campaign (I couldn't wait for the 3.0 campaign to end). Thankfully I was using only the SRD and hadn't bought the books yet... Six month later we gracefully ended the (now turned into) mini-campaign in 3.5, and never left 3.0 since then :)

I was running 2e and made my first home rules sheet to make use of 90% of the changes that were being posted for the 3e game.

When 3E came out the sheet then switched for what I did not care for in 3E.

I said that there were a number of aspects that I liked in the previews for 3e, and some concerns that I had with it. Some of my concerns were not addressed until 3.5 and others are still a problem. There's a very, very familiar feel to these days.

I quite happily shifted from 2nd to 3.0 without reservation. This time I won't change however. I'm still more than happy to use 3.5 and I've got too many reservations against 4E at this point.
