I usually fill all the 0-spell slots with Detect Magic. Or 3 Detect Magic spells and a Read Magic. And tend to have a Wand of Detect Magic (and probably a wand of Read Magic) handy. Those two cantrips are too important comparing to other cantrips.

Erase, preferably in a wand..a level 1 wand.. and a stack of scrolls with Explosive Runes cast on them.
Friendly cleric puts Spell Immunity on you, and you make force bombs go off.
Good for a Rogue with UMD and Evasion, that works too.

We've been playing a related house rule since 3.0 - wizards spontaneously cast cantrips (and clerics orisons) - but are still limited to the number of times per day as usual.

It also helps if you expand the bonus spell list to also include 0-level spells. I never understood why they left those out.

So your bonus spells are one level higher than if they started at 0th level and went up from there. Same for the second round of low level bonus spells at 20 int.
