What about Xander?

I'm still thinking Xander is a Charismatic Hero with emphasis on the Fast Talk talent tree. Cordy is the same class but emphasizing development on the Charm tree.

Actually, she's a guidance counselor who has sex with vampires, these days. (She still kills the ones she isn't boffing, though.)

But, IAE, I suggest you focus your wrath on WOTC, since the 'Shadow Chasers' setting *IS* BTVS, and I doubt anyone at WOTC who can speak without a copyright attorney listening would deny it.

It's the Fourth Great Law of the Internet. Many people feel compelled to make a "contribution" to a thread that's about a subject that doesn't appeal to them in some way. After all, a discussion on eggplants, for instance, wouldn't be productive in any way if I didn't chime in to say how much I hate eggplants.

Anyway, Xander is a bit of a tough case as far as D20 Modern goes. I guess a case could be made for Charismatic hero, Dedicated hero, or both. If hard pressed, I would choose Charismatic Hero over Dedicated. Xander doesn't have anywhere near the awareness (self or otherwise) that seems to be implied in the descriptions of the Dedicated Hero.

Could someone create a "Useless Hero" Basic Class?

I'm thinking that Xander has a little bit of Tough Hero, Dedicated Hero, and probably one level in Charismatic Hero (hey, if he can get a vengeance demon to marry him -- albeit left her at the alter -- he must be at least Charismatic).

He would also gain a level in the Soldier class during a stint in which he thought he was a veteran soldier.

Ah, but that's gone by now. Only months after that first Holloween he had mentioned the knowledge he gained by that transformation was fading fast, and he was having trouble remembering the particulars.

And I'll chuck in another vote for the charismatic hero. There have been a few times when he's really tried (or maybe when he stopped trying and just did) where it was his personality that carried the day. For example, aside form the already mentioned time he talked Willow back from craziness, there was the much earlier instance where he actually scared a gang of dead high schoolers out of blowing up the school, and another instance where he snapped Buffy back to her senses just a tad too late to save her relationship with Riley.

In those few times when he drops the sarcasm and wit and just gets serious, he can be quite charismatic.

Xander is barely player character material. I don't think a game could or should model his role as a PC option.

He has no special abilities. He's a good guy, and has a heart of gold, but if Buffy was an actual roleplaying session (rather than a TV series with scripts), Xander's player would be whining about how much his character sucks. He is barely combat worthy, his non-combat skills are fairly lame, and all the other players get more spotlight time and have cooler things to do.

Buffy - Super stong, super tough, kick-ass fighter.
Willow - Very potent witch.
Angel/Spike - Vampire ('nuff said).
Giles - Tons of knowlege skills and some combat ability.
Oz - Werewolf (but still more of an NPC).
Dawn - NPC
Anya - NPC

Basically, Xander is a great character for a TV show that has script writers who can keep him alive and interesting.

But for an RPG without a script, he is a very sucky character that very few gamers would be happy to run...

Xander probably has equal levels in every one of the stat classes, specifically so that he never actually becomes good at anything. Added to the fact that his player rolled a borderline free reroll character, makes for a truly mediocre individual.

He's there. He can try to do stuff, but he'll usually fail because his pitiful amount of ranks and stat bonuses in everything when compared to the level of challenge the party is up against basically mean that the roll of the dice rules his life.

His occupation is probably something like 'creative', gaining class skills of arts (visual and writing) and perform (standup)

Xander is actualy an advanced class, Negotiator. Just look at the class feats, except for the first one. Personaly, I think Xander can't lie becuase deep down, he doesn't want to lie.

Besides, it's how he really survives as a mundane character, he's actualy higher level and has more hit points.

He said 'doesn't want to' not 'can't'. Buffy apparently knew he was lying, anyways (if a more recent episode is to be believed). Note that he has to decide, he doesn't just jump straight to the lie.

I'd put in a vote that Xander is a multiclassed Dedicated/Charismatic hero with elevated wealth levels (compared to the rest of the near-penniless scoobs). Negotiatior as an advanced class would make sense, given his talents in that area. Particularly since Giles departure, Xander has been the 'common sense' talker (even if his own problems have obscured it sometimes).

I could even see him with a level or two of tough hero, given how he's been holding up lately.
