What are the advantages of a high Con for mage?

Im still fairly new to the D&D system and I'm not sure what benefits i could get from a dwarf's high constituion if I wante dto make him a wizard or sorceror. I mean it looks like it would be a good idea for the hitpoints alone, but is there any other use for a high con that way?

Concentration is a pretty important skill for mages and it is Con based.

yeah I guess so, but how often does Concentration actualy come into play? I mean, your always concentrating to cast your spells, right? And its not like you're going to be anymore distracted during combat than usual.

Or what am I missing?

Reread the rules on attacks of opportunity. Concentration comes into play all the bleeding time -- IMHO, it's the single most important skill for a spellcaster to take. It's so important that most WOTC spellcasting NPCs seem to take the combat casting feat.

Casting a spell in melee (hand-to-hand combat) gives attackers Attacks of Opportunity (basically a free chance to hit you). You must make a Concentration check against a DC of 10+the spell level+the damage dealt to you, or you lose the spell.

To remove the chance of getting Attacks of Opportunity, you can "Cast Defensively" which requires you to make a concentration check against a DC of 15+the spell's level.

Concentration is one of the most important skills for casters.

Ummmm.... did you fellows miss the obvious? NOT dying after getting hit once seems like a damn good benfit to me!

Nope, we all noticed that the origional poster of the thread already mentioned that obvious point.

I believe it all depends of the rest of the party. If there are two fighters and a cleric, you do not need a high CON since they'll act as a barrier between you and your enemies. However, if there is one fighter, a rogue and a bard in the party, I would suggest a high CON since it is more likely that enemies might get close with you!
