What are the best "Gamers seeking Gamers" websites for finding a new group?

By the way, the D&D Meetup is more specifically www.dnd.meetup.com

Though over 200 people are registered for NYC, very few are active, and we never getmore then 3-9 showing up at meetups. But, it is a good place to find a player or two. Each local meetup has its own set of forums.

Perhaps I'm just extraordinarily picky, but I haven't had great luck with finding players online.

I found a person on here who would have worked out fine but lived too far away.

Every time I've advertised on the WotC board, I've ended up with this creepy guy who keeps changing his email address. The first time, DH and I actually decided to meet him, but he scared the crap out of me, and since he keeps popping up, I've become leery of advertising at all. (I just looked on Access Denied, and he has posted there, too.)

Presently I have enough players, and I know a few other people who I could probably invite to play, but since all of my players are professionals in one field or another, I can forsee a time when they might all move away. If that happened, I don't know if I would ever find players again.

my whole current group(s) i've met thru the internet.

most from WotC connections. but some from here. and some from accessdenied. WotC has been huge. 18 or so gamers.


thing is.. the more active you are on the net/web the more likely you are to just get emails outta the clear blue. i've hooked up many others in Hotlanta... when i found i couldn't get them in my group.

Access Denied - This can be a good resource, but you have to be persistent as a lot of the postings are rather old.

Meetup - Never gone to one myself, but I've heard interesting stories from people who have. Typically, three quarters of the people bordering on strange, while a quarter are okay.

My recommendation is to screen people through the phone and email. Then meet with them once in a fairly public place. I tend to gauge occupation and hobbies to look for a well-balanced person. This isn't to say that I'm looking for some rocket scientist. More things like can this person hold a steady job? Do they demonstrate responsibility in their personal life? Also, ask an open-ended question about what they consider a great game to look for cohesiveness in gaming style. I've only ever had one player that I have picked with issues, and that is because I circumvented my typical process in a rush to fill the slot.

These are great solutions. I will soon be doing an online hunt for other players in the area. I already planned to meet in person at a public place as part of a "screening" process. May even go as far to run a non-committal one-shot for both parties to determine if we are a good fit for a regular gaming group.

It seems like internet gaming match databases function much like the ones for dating -- they naturally over-select low-functioning individuals and to make good use of them, you have to be comfortable with things not working out with most of the people.

For CA SF Bay Area, there's http://bayrps.com:8000/Bayrps.asp, but it has some old entries. I got one person in our gaming group from there. Doesn't help much for PA though.

Not a new resource, but this thread was started by a friend and former DM of mine. Not sure if it's close to Carlisle PA, but it's in PA!

...And he's a swell guy, a very enthusiastic and energetic DM, and...did I mention he's a stand-up guy?
