What are the more popular roleplaying systems?

The White Wolf games are still quite popular. I'm a big fan of Feng Shui, myself. It's not as big or well developed, but it's a FUN game.

The best RPG out there is Paranoia. Don't belive me? Try NOT roleplaying in that game. See where it gets you.

My next pick would be Pendragon. I have yet to see another game where the mechanics encouraged the roleplay in such a fashion.

My third pick would be Shadowrun. But you get to roll lots of dice in that game. I love picking up an entire handful of dice when I'm about to do something big. My previous two picks aside, I dig rolling dice.

The most popular systems seem, at the moment, to be:

GURPS

White Wolf's Storyteller system (I think that's what it's called)

Chaosium's BRP system

the Hero system

This is just based on how often I see or hear them mentioned. The system which has the most support, and which covers just about anything, is GURPS. Not my favorite system, but they sure do a great job on the sourcebooks, covering everything from the Lensmen to Cops, from 50s scifi to Cyberpunk.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying - not great for long term games (like any character last long term) but one of the good ones.

Earthdawn - great game.
